Carla J. Maier
Carla J. Maier (b. Müller-Schulzke 1976) is an independent researcher based in Berlin/ Germany working at the intersection of sound studies, postcolonial and cultural studies, music and cultural anthropology. She recently completed a Marie Curie Research Fellowship at the Department of Arts and Cultural Studies (IKK) at the University of Copenhagen/Denmark, with a project on Travelling Sounds: A Cultural Analysis of Sonic Artefacts in Postcolonial Europe (2018-2020). From 2016-2018 she was postdoc researcher and project coordinator at Leuphana University Lüneburg working in a research project which investigated sound and other media practices in postmigrant theatre productions and inclusive processes in schools (see trakubi.com From 2014-2016 she was postdoc researcher in the base project »Analog Storage Media« at the Cluster of Excellence »Image Knowledge Gestaltung« at Humboldt-University Berlin. Here she initiated and conducted a collaborative project with sound artist and composer Marianthi Papalexandri-Alexandri on »The Materiality of Notation: Instruments as Analog Archives«. From 2012-2014, she worked as a researcher in the project »Sound Studies Lab: Functional Sounds«, funded by the German Research Foundation, in the context of which has co-conceptualised and co-organised the First International Conference of the European Sound Studies Association (ESSA). Carla J. Maier is author of the monograph Transcultural Sound Practices: South Asian Dance Music as Cultural Transformation (Bloomsbury Academic 2020). She is a member of the research laboratories Critical Europeanization Studies and Migration at Humboldt University Berlin. Her background as a music performer is as a singer and guitarist in punk & electro bands.
